[NTLK] talk to a modem how?

I'm trying to get a PCMCIA modem to work. How can I communicate with it
directly to send it commands and see replies? On a desktop, most
terminal programs permit this. Using PT100, I haven't figured out how
to to do this. It always tries to dial up immediately, and fails.
