OK folks, this whole "I connect through a direct cable connection to
the mac and it doesn't work" business needs a bit of explanation:
MacOSX deactivates the ethernet connection if the interface is not
active (meaning the other end of the cable is not active). If you use a
switch / hub, you will get the connection allright because the
interface is UP.
On the other side, I personnaly experienced the fact that the newton
does about the same. Therefore, when you use AppleTalk, it is a steady
link activation WITHOUT ANY DETECTION. It activates the newton
interface as well as MacOSX's. And then you can have a connection.
I hope I am clear enough on that problem, since we still have to
experiment through on this topic...
