Some more details about the drive(s).
Actually, I have 2 drives showing these synthoms. One is the 12 GB, the=20=
other is a 30 GB, both are IBM Travelstars. The 12 GB started making=20
the noise about 6 months after I bought it, I had it in my PowerBook=20
1400cs. I took it out this morning and put the old 2 GB drive back -=20
it's ok for Newton Backups and listening to a radio station from back=20
home.
The 30 GB drive is in my (now my wife's) PowerBook G3 FireWire. It=20
started making the whining noise about a month after I bought the=20
machine. At the time (February 2001), I took the machine to an Apple=20
store (I lived in Dallas, then, and there is one over there) a bit=20
later and they wanted to send the whole machine in to Apple to have it=20=
checked out. I couldn't do that at that point, as I was using it for=20
some development I was doing.
The drive is still in the machine and running MacOS X 10.2.3 quite=20
nicely, I get the feeling it's faster than my TiBook 667 at times.=20
There are no grinding noises, just the whine. I can probably record=20
this somehow and convert it to MP3. I also don't notice that the noise=20=
is getting worse.
The 12 GB is lying in the shelf right now and I might replace the 30 GB=20=
drive if it's driving us too mad. I would probably get a 60 GB for the=20=
TiBook and use the 30 GB drive in my wife's machine.
Thanks for the input, guys!
Best regards,
Chris
