Well, when I tried it the other day, I was also puzzled by the port popup,
and was not sure it would work, since the choices in the popup were only
'Printer', 'Modem' and 'Printer and modem'. I think I left it where it was
and then I launched the transfer tool on my Newton. I hit 'Connect' and then
I was presented with a small window on the Newton with the name of my Pismo.
I selected and closed the window and the 2 applications were connected
together. I didn't have to do anything else and it worked the first time.

Back to AppleTalk that seems to turn off itself or being inactive in
Classic, you might want to reboot in 9 and check that you have a location in
'Location Manager' that is named 'Classic'. Make sure that the AppleTalk
settings for that location is properly configured, that it's active and uses
your main Ethernet connection. The connection isn't that important because
OS X will switch that setting in Classic whether you switch for Ethernet
wired or AirPort.
