You might find that going in yourself may work. The
digitizer for the Newt is through a simple ribbon
cable that is pressed against 4 contacts on the main
board. Either pressure has been lost (through a
stripped or missing screw) or there is damage to the
ribbon cable. Or, it could be that it just "slipped"
out. Easy enough to fix...
I would spend a little time looking at this before I
sent it to Apple...
