[NTLK] a newbie pondering

Hi, I'm new to the list. I just bought a 2100 and it is quickly
replacing my Visor. I've watched Newton folks for years protest the
cancellation of the platform for years and always wondered why. It
seems the community has extended the capabilities of the 2100 so that it
is pretty competitive with a fairly high end Pocket PC (without a color
screen).

I've been reading a lot of posts about what folks would like to see in a
next generation newton. I have a different take. I was wondering if
the Beetles that were (and I believe still may be) produced in Mexico
long after they were discontinued everywhere else would be a model for
carrying on the platform. It seems with minor upgrading (a better I/O
than the interconnect port and more on board storage), the device would
be useful for years to come. The community could still continue writing
drivers as needed. My question would be what would the 2100 cost to
produce today? I can really see why Apple killed it at the time, as
they really did need to focus on the OS and shoring up the platform. My
beef is with how they killed it. It doesn't seem right just to sit on
the technology if you aren't going to do anything with it.
