Yes I have done it. But it is a fiddle, especially soldering the tab batteries.

I use a alkaline battery holder instead with NiMH batteries,
modifying the battery compartment with tape and a bit of plastic so
the batteries charge. The holders should be available. I saw them for
sale in large quantities on the web in the last year. Ah, here is

I think someone on the list bought a carton of them and may sell you
