For crying out loud, you had me going there... If you look at the diagram
and the fact this is a continuation of a patent action started in 1995, you
immediately see that this is NOT a *new* patent for some future Newton-like
PDA. It is, in fact, for the Newton itself! Probably there was an internal
audit of Apple's IP portfolio and somebody noticed this patent action never
got completed. Since we all know how Apple is at protecting its IP, even
the IP that'll likely never see the light of day, this activity is nothing
worth wasting the rumor mill on.
