[NTLK] Mapper ideal/max map size/resolution?

When making a map, what resolution should I use? How big can the map be before it starts getting reduced?

I scanned a map at at the lowest resolution I could, 100 ppi. The result was just barely readable. When I finally got it into Mapper it was scaled down too much to be readable anymore.
