If the subject is relevant to the operation of the list, such as "why doesn't
the list operate in such-and-such way, what's with this quoting restriction,"
then that's not OT. I'd prefer that people send bug reports, problems with
sending/receiving list mail, as 99% of the time these are localized problems
that everyone need not be concerned with.

For severely off-topic threads, such as p***ine, gun control, politics, etc.
I would suggest taking it off-list, either in private e-mails or in the form
of a QuickTopic. QuickTopic is a totally free, "preposterously easy" web
forum site. Anyone can set up a forum, it is as private as you want it to be
(because you control who gets the unique URL to it), any you don't need to
sign up to post to a QuickTopic (although if you do, you can track forums and
such). I would highly recommend it.

The only answer is to use your discretion. Say someone posts a question with
the subject "Airport setup". Once their problem is solved, they reply to the
post and say "OK! Now, what cool software should I install?" That would be a
time to change the subject. Even better would be to compose a new message
instead of replying to the previous message, since that will more effectively
stop the thread and start a new one, from some mail reader's perspective.

I didn't realize that the spores in the lake had flamed up again... I mean, I
knew Lake Ontario had pollution, but this is the first I've heard of this :)
