Everything that you listed is there. Very odd indeed. In addition to that
unreadable error I get when I first put it in, I also get a -61001 error
whenI try to connect in NetHopper. I looked up that error code and it says
its mainly due to an absent PC card, which, if the eMate isn't recognizing
upon insert, would be accurate. This is very baffling!

you should have installed:
FarallonEnet
3c589
Newton Internet Enabler
Newton Devices
NIE Ethernet Module
Internet Setup
And these are all installed internally.
After installing a reset (remove all cards first) is a good idea.
