Ed,

I have a book by Peter Belanger from 1999 that is a set of world maps
rendered in greyscale and very handy as a crutch when trying to remember
national borders. He also has regional maps of California I see.

They do take a lot of heap to display and have to be tailored to a
particular screen orientation but they do scroll fast and can be annotated
etc. and are of high quality.

Joel.
