If what you're asking is whether to use a printer cable or a modem cable, use the printer cable. Then, in the Connection package's "Connect Via" slip, select "serial". Set up the Mac appropriately.
By the way, using an AppleTalk (over PhoneNet) is way faster than using a serial connection.
