Anyhow, regarding the threaded hole, and the two
holes next to it on the underside of the eMate. Was there ever a
commercially available widget that attached there? The threaded hole fits the
bolt used on camera tripods, but it seems that something designed for the
eMate would have taken advantage of the other plain holes adjoining thus
making it more stable.

My tripod mount has a sprung peg just about the same distance from the screw as the plain holes. It is to stop any twist. There are two so that you can attach from left or right - whichever is most convenient.
