Well, not a REAL demo, but a mock up. At the 2nd
Annual Symposium of the Newton SI/VAR in '96 we were
shown a movie that showed an individual in what I
think was Japan pointing a Newton looking device at a
sign and the translation of the sign showing up in
English on the Newt. There was another one that showed
what looked like a tourist pointing a newton looking
device at some grafitti on a wall and the grafitti was
translated on the Newt.
Of course, these were just mock-ups, but it was
impressive none-the-less!
