I do this with my digital camera's all the time.
5 years ago with my Ricoh and now with my Nikon, both
have a "document" mode which switches the camera to a
high-contrast black and white mode. Then when I get
the image into my computer and convert it to a TIFF, I
use Omnipage OCR to convert to text. I've done this
for magazine articles in the library, and even a sign
in the Outerbanks.
This works well and I never have a problem. And it has
gotten even easier what with USB ports being so
reliable as they are (My original Ricoh had a serial
port download only...)
