Actually, patents usually do not take longer than 2-3 years to issue.
I've had some take 4 years when we had to fight hard, or if odd
circumstances occur (two patents covering the same issue are filed
nearly at the same time). For a patent to be in the "hopper" for 7-8
years is rather odd indeed.
