Flash memory never uses a battery. If it does have a battery compartment
then it is SRAM not Flash ram. Ed is correct though if you remove the
battery when the card is unplugged from the Newton, it may loose its memory.
Many SRAM cards have a capacitor so that memory is retained while you
replace the battery. I have one SRAM card that held memory for over 30
minutes without a battery because of this backup capacitor. And of course
sometimes these capacitors (or secondary rechargeable battery) fail so
replacing it outside the Newt, is still a risk. If you want to be 100%
safe, replace it while it is plugged into your Newton.
