Hello Ron,

I have been quite unable to get an Ethernet connection working from
Classic under Panther. Exactly the problems you describe. I now use
MacOS X applications to make a serial connection (the apps do not yet
support other forms, it seems), whilst awaiting a wireless PCMCIA card
for the MessagePad in order to (hopefully) create a faster connection
that way. Both Escale and NewTn seem to work fine under Panther for me.

As for Classic apps, I am also unable to use Newton Press fully under
Panther, as it will not accept graphics. The only solution I see for
that is to dig out an old Mac from a cupboard, which probably still
runs MacOS 7 (the Mac, not the cupboard!).
