[NTLK] [OT] Mobile e-mail access in Russia

I know this is way off-topic, but I also know we're all in the mobile
technology game so here goes...

I have a friend in the UK who's going to Russia soon, who would like to
be able to pick up e-mails out there. For many reasons she would like
to do it using a mobile phone / PC laptop combination (not Newton,
sadly) so she's not tied to a land line; she will be mainly in Moscow
and St Petersburg. She's fluent in Russian but not in Technology; the
trip is being funded, so reliability and simplicity are important but
cost is not too much of an issue. Her IT man says it's not possible,
but I can't believe that.

Any advice on what phone / service-provider / network / setup works
well there would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou for your time

Simon
