The article (an interview in the Wall Street Journal) is available
online only to WSJ subscribers, but I think the explanation was that
Apple doesn't see much opportunity in that market. As to how far it
went, that's difficult to say; most of the rumors came from
less-than-reliable sources (even as rumor sites go), so I'd be very
surprised if it went further than a few prototypes.
