But threading in e-mail actually doesn't rely on the subject line. It relies
on the In-Reply-To header which, if it exists, should contain the message ID
that the message is a reply to. All modern mail clients that I've seen add
this header properly, and anything that supports threading e-mail should use
it. The subject line can also be used as a hint, but it shouldn't be relied
upon.

Some people like to start a new topic by hitting reply on a post, then just
deleting the subject and body. But this causes their mail client to still
consider the message part of a thread, and so sometimes I get messages
attached to threads that are totally unrelated.
