So if you whish it is a trade off between the two options:

a) searching for a cheap BL foil, disassemble your Newt, experimenting with
it, finding out it does not fit your needs, starting over ...

OR

b) spending something like 90 EUR for the replacement kit being 100% sure
that it will work.

With regards to a) I am 100% sure that you will not be able to find the
right foil on the first shot, so you have to take that into account. In
order to find out if the foil works according to your needs and
expectations, you need to disassemble your Newt almost completely.
Personally I would like to do that only once with my Newt, except you have a
bare bone to do that.

The technology of LCDs and BL changed quiet a bit since the Newt has been
disontinued. As I mentioned before, the Newt BL material was very well
matched to the Newt LCD properties and the BL power supply was designed to
drive this special BL foil.
I think it will be rather difficult if not impossible nowadays to find a BL
foil that would perfectly match to the original one. So you might end up in
a BL with very poor performance (and I remind you that this is not only the
pure brightness of the BL, it covers reflection properties, emitted color
spectrum, uniformity of the material, readabilty of the LCD during daylight
and with BL etc.) and or the need to redesign the BL power supply.

In fact the BL foil provided from Backlight4you is a special product with a
special chemestry, manufactured and tested for that application only.

Finally if you take all that into account plus all the effort spent from the
Newton BL project to achieve this, IMO the price of this replacement kit
seems more than justified.

This is my personal opinion and experience. It turns out quiet often that if
you are going for a cheaper (modular) solution, taking all the risk
assembling, experimenting and trying out things yourself, you may end up in
a situation where you spent much more money as the ready-to-use solution
would have costed. (Again, this is my personal experience)

Cheers
Johannes
