Did you enable AppleTalk (and LocalTalk maybe) on the printer panel?

That's wrong. You have to set the AppleTalk settings on the Newton to
LocalTalk, and then when you print have it locate a network printer. It
should come up with a list with just one printer, an HP LaserJet 4. Then you
should be able to print.
