Erm... I have to disagree :)
The templars were knights (like... erm... feudal thingies) who went to
the First Crusade and decided to stay there to defend the new
territories, and the christian pilgrims.
Their Order has been officialized by the Vatican somewhere near 1150
(50 years after the crusade).
They were supposed to be a "warrior-monks" order. But they were free to
make their own decisions (give or take a few excommunications and the
fact they were driven off by the Sarrasins after a few years).

Once they returned to France, they became a somewhat calmer order, and
is said to have been a pretty rich one.

They were dismantled by Phillipe le Bel (a French king) around 1310,
and the official reason is heresy (they were, after all, living with
Infidels back in Jerusalem). Some say the king did so to take over
their riches, others that the Vatican feared their popularity, and
others that they were really corrupted by greed, or worse, by the
deviant religions of the various sects that dwell in the middle east.

Don't believe what you see in some Blizzard (tm) games ;)
