The specification is in some modem standards, maybe the V42 one.

Code in Escale is derived from Philz' which is available in lpkg, a linux
package loader distributed with a very permissive license:
http://vyx.net/~philz/files/lpkg.tar.gz

The other open source implementation is by Richard C. L. Li, in UnixNPI,
but that one is available under GPL and theoretically, it cannot be
included in your RealBASIC code/plug-in (like code in the DCL actually).
