Basically you use the same cables to connect the computer to the
desktop as you do for backing up and package installation. Now for on your
desktop you use a terminal program (Hyperterm as an example but there are
many others), something with say V100 emulation. They are just simple
terminal software which where used to dial into services such as Genie,
Compuserve, bulletin boards, etc years ago. You want a terminal that can
directly communicate with a com port. Usually when you set up a terminal
program when you can select the com port to communicate with, you select the
port that your newton is on rather than the one your modem is on. Some did
automatic detection of your modem so if it does this you will have to
manually
change it.

Once you have the right port set, then you want to set the terminal software
to use 9600 baud (usually in the same spot that you set the com port, look
for an advanced or settings button). And you want 8 bit, no parity, stop
bit of 1, and flow control set to x-on/x-off. When you have all that set up
you are ready to exchange text.

When you want to send text to the newton, go into Availworks, and under the
file menu tap page setup and set how many pages your document will have. It
is best to have more pages than you need so you don't loose anything, and
you can always reduce the amount of pages later. Then back in the file
menu tap Import/Export. Now on your desktop find the "send text" item that
should be in a send menu or something similar, select the file you want to
send and the transfer will start. In general it is pretty quick and should
only take a few seconds. If you don't see anything on the desktop screen
being displayed it is probably because you don't have local echo on (a
setting in the terminal software). One way to tell if it is done is try to
tap on scroll arrow in Availworks, if you can and the text scrolls the
transfer is done, if you can't it is probably still transferring. As I said
it is probably best to turn on local echo.

To send text to the desktop it is the same basic idea, just a few different
menu items. On the desktop (in the terminal software) turn on text capture
(it should be in the same menu as send text) and give a file name to save
the text to. Then go into Availworks and in the file menu tap on
import/export to Mac/PC and in the pop up box tap on all objects and check
background text. Then hit export and all the text should dump to the
desktop.

Hope this helps.

About the text dumping part, is that done using NewtDump or some other
program? Again, please excuse me if this has been covered in depth before.
