To those suggestions already made I would add NewtDB and follow Dan's
approach to see exactly what you want from the DB especially with regard to
connectivity.

It's easy to start entering data only to find later that there is something
important that you need which is missing.

eBase is a nice, simple data capture program with a strong Newton feel but
cannot accept imported data and has limitations if you need many fields.
Exporting data to the Mac host application works well.

NewtDB is a very solid piece of work that has a good query system and proper
tabular record display. It also has relational capabilities which sounds
scary but is actually simple to set up and can speed up data entry.

FilePad has the best data entry system (just write in the fields without a
preliminary tap) but has a laborious query process which slows things down a
lout and a restricted table view.

Both NDB and FP have very good screen layout tools.

I have had problems with exporting larger databases (>100 records) with
FilePad - the Mac SW suppilied is still very basic and not too reliable. One
of my FP DBs could not export its data no matter what I tried so I have
stopped using it.

NewtDB can use a terminal emulator communications program which works well
on all platforms and has proved reliable at transferring data.

NewtDB is free but you still have to obtain a registration code from the
author - this can take some weeks but it comes eventually.

Notion has been reliable for me but the slightly clumsy data entry process,
the limitations in field layout and numbers means it's best as what it means
to be, a list manager. For that I usually prefer using outlines/checklists.
