Churchill Launch Range (CLR) was one of the first scientific rocket ranges
in the world and Canada's only rocket launch facility, is located on the
northeastern tip of Manitoba, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of
Winnipeg. It is located at 58"45'N, 94"04'W, with the altitude at
approximately 29 metres.
CLR was opened in 1957 during the International Geophysical Year, as a
launch site for sounding rockets to study the earth's space environment.
CLR is ideally situated for the study of the midauroral belt.
It was closed in December 1958, reopened by the U.S. Army in 1959, and then
transferred to the U.S. Air Force in 1962. The National Research Council of
Canada (NRC) took over operations in 1966. During its years of operation,
approximately 3500 sounding rockets were launched from CLR with the
majority of these launches performed during the winter season. NASA and
other organizations also have used CLR under the auspices of the NRC. Due
to Canadian government cutbacks in late 1984, CLR was closed as a launch
facility.
In September 1993, a private company was issued a lease for the operation
of CLR as a commercial venture to be known as SpacePort Canada. In May of
1998, the company ceased operations after many attempts to attract orbital
launch contracts and a strategic investor.
The range is now owned by the Province of Manitoba, with light maintenance
operations contracted to the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, co-located
on the site.
