This picture shows the whole board:
http://newton.tek-ed.com/newtspeed/img0002.htm
The supercap is at the bottom of the picture in the
center
As a reference, it's right next to the divider between
the PC card slots.
But I don't think that is your problem though...
As an experiment, I powered down my Newt and popped
out the battery for a second, then put it back in and
turned it on... it too restarted and reloaded all the
packages. The supercap is used to keep the clock
current (I think it also keeps information about the
power unit and stuff, but I'm not the expert) but not
to keep the packages loaded...
I'ld still look for a power interuption being the
cause.

=====
In 1913, Lee De Forest was prosecuted by U.S. government officials
for claiming to potential investors that his company, RCA, would soon be
able to transmit the human voice over the Atlantic Ocean. The
prosecuting officials argued that his claim was so utterly ridiculous
that he was surely ripping off investors. He was ultimately released
but not before being admonished by the judge to stop making any more
fraudulent claims.
