I have such a beast.
But the Apple MB and the HP MB were quite different and not
interchangeable (physically they didn't fit in many cases)

True, Anything related to the physical imaging engine could be swapped
as Apple did nothing to those.
This is a lot of the printer, but not all of it. Many parts were the
same. Plastics were almost guaranteed to be different.

Like anything else Apple, or anyone else, rebrands or sources from
others they have their own tweaks and packaging to differentiate it
from the true vendors product. Sometime these are useful additions and
changes, and sometime they are just changes.
