Thats the trick I've heard, in general - to use an apple laptop with
the lid closed you:
A) hook up an external monitor (or just an adaptor (like the 5300 video
out to vga dongle, or a vga to mac adapter etc.) to the video out port.
B) hook an external adb or usb keyboard
C) start the machine from the EXTERNAL KEYBOARD, and it won't
automatically go to sleep once the finder starts IF it is displaying on
an external screen.
I'm not sure if this works with the dual usb iBooks or the 12 inch
alBook (with the minivga or miniDvi video out ports).

Again - always consider that a closed laptop won't cool *as*
efficiently as an open one.
