i went to work for a startup company (instead of a research centre).
GNUton was a "spare-time" project, and i haven't had any of that for a
while now ...
it is, i think, very close to running rudimentary NewtonScript
programs. much of what is required is already written, and writing the
rest is not difficult.
the biggest task left before it is useful is reproducing the built-in
protos for all the GUI, stores, networking, etc, stuff that NewtonOS
provides. GNUton was designed as a layer on top of an existing OS (not
a complete OS in itself), and so stuff like 802.11 or Bluetooth drivers
(for instance) would not be portable from NewtonOS to GNUton, but would
rather be provided by the underlying OS, and exposed only at the higher
levels of abstraction. so this is not an enormous task, but it's still
big.
the most immediate task is to choose a GUI toolkit to form a basis for
the GUI protos. i always wanted portability, but never really found
something i was happy with. to replicate the NewtonOS you basically
want to deal with a raw canvas, rather then using any sort of exiting
widgets.
the code is currently published under the GPL. i'd be happy for others
to continue its development ... there have been several people contact
me over the years, but nothing has ever really come of the interest.
feel free to contact me off-list.
