What you have seen is an indication that your battery is coming close to end
of life.
In case the battery is totally empty (near 0 V), the charging current is
getting too high, the power adapter will start to limit the current (max.
1.3 Amps) and therefore reduce the output voltage.
This is indicated from the Newt and interpreted as "deep toast" - as a
consequence, the Newt switches off the charging current - you saw a few
milliamps only.
When you restart the Newt, the Battery may have taken some charge during the
hours of feeding it with a few milliamps as you reported. As a consequence,
the Battery has regained a certain voltage that is lower than the expected
minimum voltage - in this case the Newt will show "preliminaryCharge" which
means that the Newt will not yet apply the full charging current like in the
fast charging mode.
After the initial voltage is reached, the newt will assume the battery to be
ok and will continue with the well known charging procedure fast charging
and then trickle charging continuous.

Cheers
Johannes
