It's only frowned on when someone does it to you. Otherwise, you think of
it as a strategic victory. Unfortunately I lose more than I win due to those
snipers. So close to having my Programming the Newton with Windows book, and
then last 5 seconds of the auction, and it's not mine.

term for this activity.
I use a free software(jbidwatcher) which will run on any Java
compatible platform(OSX for me), and allows browsing of auctions,
searching of auctions, and most usefully sniping.
So I leave it running on my old OSX server, and tell it how much to
bid, and it will try and do so directly before the auction ends.
