You didn't say which version of of OSX you are running...
One thing that can be helpful is to find the most relevant combo update
and apply that. (ie 10.2.8 or 10.3.2)
Also if you have not tried already you should go to the
Applications/Utilities and run the Disk Utility and repair permissions,
although this doesn't sound like your problem to me.
Also running Applications/Utilities/Console and then crashing MIGHT
give you more info about what's wrong.
