I have been following the discussion on the possible new incarnation
of Newton by a third party.
I really couldn't see Apple letting go of any of the core Newton
technologies because there far to valuable. The patents and
interlectual property are in the software, namely HRW,
Owner/Identities/Worksite, the Notebook, Addressbook and Assit and as I
under it are the core of the Newton platform. The Newton hardware,
which supports the software and allows the user to interact with
software isn't so important. Looking at current technological advances
and the level of very high integration of components onto single pieces
of silicon, VLSI, now seen in all electronics makes the MP 2100
hardware archaic and bulky. Don't get me wrong, I'm not paying out the
Newton just stating what is available and possible with hardware these
days. If a son of Newton were to come out it would have to have a
display at least the size of MP 2000/2100, but could be very slim or
have months of battery life.
The iPod is a fine example of hardware miniturisation and integration,
this is the model Apple will us for its next LSD, hopefully with Newton
like features.
