Now that you've fixed your problem with files you already have, you can nip
this in the bud for future downloads by changing the file associations that
your web browser is giving the .pkg files.

Am I right in guessing that these are packages you downloaded directly from
the net? If so, then your browser is associating those pkg files with some
other application. It's been a while since I've played with browsers in 9,
but I believe that both IE and Netscape have the option in their preferences
for changing this. You need to find the options for this. In Internet
Explorer, I think it's called "File Helpers" in the "Receiving Files"
section of your preferences. I'm going to assume you are using IE, and try
to help from there. Once you call up this window, you will see a big pane in
the Preferences window, with a list of names and stuff... Above that, are
words like "Name" "Extension" "Mime type" etc... I think there are four,
with two on each side. Find the "extension" one and click on it. This will
sort the list below by the file extension, which is what you are going to
search for. Once you do that, simply type "pkg" relatively quickly. If you
did it right, you should have a line hilighted, and on the right, you should
see the ".pkg" extension. If not, find the "P"s and find that extension in
the list. My bet is that if you will look, you will find that this
extension is considered an AppleLink file, and associated with some strange
application. I can't remember which, unfortunately! It's also possible that
it is even linked to StuffIt. In either case, this is not what you want. You
want to change this.

Next, making sure this line item is selected, click below on the button
named "Change". Somewhere in the window that opens, you will have the choice
to change the application to associate with. Click on that button, and find
NCU.

Now, after you've done that, there should be a popup menu to select the file
type. Once you've chosen the package, you can close that window, and you
ought to be set... All future downloads of packages should have the right
icon and creator and file type, and you should be happy!

If you need more help, email me offlist, and I'll try to be more specific.
I'll need to know, however, what browser you use. :-)
