You probably came across the problem of writing cache and removable storage:
If you don't explicitly unmount the storage there's the cache left.
So the medium IS now corrupt.
When replug the device after only a shot time, all thing went well.
If you wait a longer time before replugging the OS will have cleaned up
its cache.
If you wait some with the device plugged the OS will commit the cache.
So for your boss his OS should be configured to not using write cache on
USB mass storages.
