If you don't know the queue name, set it to "lp" (without quotes).
Latest version of CUPS LPD driver forwards this to the default queue.
You can also print the status of every queues (with their names) by
using the lpq command.

CUPS' LPD driver quietly accepts jobs for unknown queues and then
delete them. Usually something appears in the log. You can force the
debug mode if required. Check the configuration in
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

The LPR Driver 1.0 is very strict about how things should happen and
will report any problem (to the system that will just summarize with
minimalist message "Newton was unable to print"). Hence if it says
nothing, the print job really was accepted on the other side.

And yes, spooling is required for CUPS.
