Nope, definitely shouldn't be like that.
Can you check where in the backup process it stalls and if this is at
the same point every time?
There might be a corrupt entry somewhere that you can localize. Another
option is to export your Names, Dates etc. to Claris Organizer format
and see if that works.
Again, if it doesn't you might spot the offending entry...
