There are no rules of thumb for using slowdown. People
have reported that they don't need it at all even with
blazingly fast PCs, others need it as of Pentium 1
PCs. I usually do it like that:
1) Start one instance of slowdown and move both sliders
all the way to the right.
2) If a reliable connection can be established, you can
move the sliders back to the left until the connection becomes
flaky.
3) If a reliable connection can't be established, leave
the current instance with the sliders all the way to the
right, start a new slowdown instance and proceed with step
1. Eventually, you will have a setup that allows a reliable
connection.
Be aware that said setup might be different for different
Newton models. On my 1.8 GHz Pentium I need one instance with
sliders about 75% to the right for Newton 2000 and 2100,
one instance with sliders all the way to the right for
eMate and Newton 120 and 130, and two instances with sliders
all the way to the right for OMP / MP100.
