Apple's CEO Steve Jobs canceled the newton family after he said it was
not a device many people would use in their lives, and not a device
people would take with them everywhere. The iPod mp3 player was born a
couple years later. iPod set the standard for mp3 players everywhere.
With its large user base, many companies decided to make products for
use with iPod, first the normal carrying cases and holders, but it
quickly grew to car attachments and most recently devices to record
voice, and to import photos off of compact flash cards with small
capacities. With these devices, Apple was more than happy to include
software for using these with their iPods.
iPod quickly grew, and now as I look upon the iPod website, I see
something called 'Music and More'. Basically it is an area telling us
about all the other features of iPod, some of them include a calendar
(that can sync with iCal), a phone number database, games (one of them
being Breakout, Steve's favorite game for obvious reasons), text notes
(such as grocery lists, as it states), and an alarm clock (for both a
buzzer and music). It seems to me like Steve and Apple are drifting
more and more toward a hand held computer rather than a digital music
player.
Originally, I was planning on writing and sending this note on the
weekend, and I was planning on concluding the message with "What's
next for the iPod, color or will it be a touch screen?", but now I see
something new on the site called a 'iPod Photo'. This allows you to
view in full color photos on your iPod, no video, I believe? So, whats
coming next, a web browser? I could browse the web on an iPod easily.
The wheel will scroll down links, the skip forward and behind will
work great for back and forward buttons, and the menu button would
quit the browser. So, will the browser be next, or will a touch screen
or other feature come first? We're waiting Steve, we have been for six
years.
