Yes, for the internal modem (or something) that was going to use the
covered port that the SER-001 ends up using. Modem form factor was very
different than SER-001, and the other onboard port is located far away
from the primary port's aux connector that SER-001 uses. The newt has
capacity to use up to four serial ports (two onboard, two in PCMCIA
cards) in NOS 2.1, but *very* few software packages ever gave the option
of selecting another than primary serial port anyway, so there was a
chicken/egg issue with starting to use more than one serial port.
