The mAH rating just tells you how long the battery will run before needing
to be recharged (the higher the better). I recently did a hack on my eMate
so that it now runs off of rechargable NiMH cells rather than the
proprietary battery pack, and I'm using 2300mAH batteries in there (far
higher than the original 1200mAH cells) and it works fine. I do believe,
though, that for your Newton to recharge them that the batteries need to be
NiMH batteries. But if you don't have the adapter anyway, that shouldn't be
an issue.
