I don't find the ATA card slower at all. I think the reason it's slower
in your case is that you're
probably comparing it with a smaller Flash card. You will see the same
speed differences when
comparing say a 2Mb Flash with a 32Mb flash card. I may be wrong but
that's what I've experienced
with my cards.

Nope. 32 mb linear flash to various ATA cards (48 and 64 mb and 1
gig microdrive).
Transfer time to those cards is slower. =20
Admitively the slow down in the directory is mostly do to the shear
number of files (load on the cache)
