Perhaps the BIGGEST and smartest move MS ever did was way back with
about Word 3 on Mac OS.
They knew everyone pirated it. And they did little if anything to stop
it.

They eventually actually even offered an amnesty to folks where you
could register your pirate copy for $50 or so.
They now had tons of former pirates hooked on the update bandwagon, and
had made money from something that they otherwise would never have.

IF Apple is smart they'd do about the same.
Folks could bitch and gripe about how OS X on their "unsupported
machines" simply doesn't work etc and Apple has NO obligation to help
them or fix it. Yet there may be a lot of people try it out. Then Apple
could offer the amnesty and officially support a lot more hardware and
voila ... viral OS sales !
