The objective was to *reduce* the cost. ;)

What I found especially appalling is that this way of interfacing
would slow you down enormously due to you havoing to create the same
interfaces over and over again. While say the datebook application is
neat in a way should you happen to use a paper organizer anyway. Just
scribble it in & it will remind you. Still, this thing does nothing
even the cheapest Palm could not do more efficiently. The idea of
creating your interface yourself is great, but the pre-printed paper
reliance is just out. If you had, say, a clipboard style device that
projected an interface on any given paper which you could then
manipulate while using a proximity sensor instead of the patterned
paper... that would be promising. A solution for *this* century would
of course replace the paper with E-Paper. Back to the scroll. I think
I've seen some Philips prototype a while ago - basically a fat,
butt-ugly scroll with an E-Paper screen rolled up inside, and some
whacky gears in the back to support the screen. Per-fect.
