As a mere male I recommend getting something broken, like and old PC or
radio or whatever, and then playing with it, by soldering wires onto
various places and the removing them again.
You want to make sure the iron is hot, and your result should
definitely look shiny and smooth when finished. If it's dull that
indicated the metal wasn't hot enough to puddle properly and you have a
weak joint.
Soldering a bunch of junk will give you the confidence to work on real
stuff too.
Also, be careful which tools you select. There are a lot of different
types of soldering irons, some aren't intended for tiny circuit boards.
You want to use as little heat as you can, so that you don't burn
anything.
