Not with the AA battery tray, the rechargeable battery pack for the
newton includes a thermistor attached to a couple of extra contacts on
the bottom of the tray. If the newton doesn't sense the presence of
these contacts/thermistor it won't charge.
It is however possible to add a thermistor to the AA battery tray, or
to replace the battery cells in the rechargeable battery pack with new
ones.
